Bombing (failing, making mistakes-whatever you call it) is essential to the development of any skill.
The best way to develop a skill is-to do it. And to continue to do it.
As you learn, you’re going to bomb. You’re going to write something that doesn’t make sense, paint something that looks like crap, ship a product that no one buys.
That’s part of the process
Bombing is important because when you’re getting started, you don’t know what’s good and what’s crap. The only way to learn is to create and see how people respond.
Austin continues, “The trouble is, we don’t always know what’s good and what sucks. That’s why it’s important to get things in front of others and see how they react.”
Continually creating-creates the habit in us. Sharing our work helps us get over the fear of bombing. We’re going to Bomb. It’s part of the process.
In one of our favorite new shows, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel a whole episode (Season 1, Episode 5) is devoted to how to recover when you bomb.
Midge is learning to become a stand up comic. Her first time at it, was a huge success. So she expected everytime to be like that, until-it wasn’t.
She mentions to her manager Susie, that the Pros never bomb. Bob Hope never bombed. Susie’s reponse is brilliant,
“They spent years bombing and honing their acts so you don’t have to see them bomb, believe me.”
Midge replies, “Why would anyone do this if they’re just gonna bomb?”
and again a brilliant response from Susie, “Because it’s part of the process”
Don’t be afraid of bombing.
Don’t let the chance of bombing prevent you from ever trying.
Try, Bomb, and keep doing it.
Soon you’ll be one of the greats.
